A Message from Administration:
Thank you to our families who have been able to attend our Back-to-School Nights this week! It has been great to see everyone and answer questions! We will be posting the PowerPoints on our website. Please contact your child’s teacher with questions.
On Wednesday October 7th and Wednesday October 14th, students in grades 2-5 only will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment in an online format. This will change your weekly schedule so please mark your calendars. Wednesdays are usually when students only work on asynchronous assignments. Therefore, there will be a change in schedule for these two weeks only.
There will be two LIVE sessions of the Reading and Math test so that the testing sessions are smaller than a traditional class. Your child can attend either the morning or the afternoon session.
Reading MAP Assessment will be given on October 7 at 9:00am and 1:00pm.
Math MAP Assessment will be given on October 14 at 9:00am and 1:00pm.
It is important that your child takes this assessment independently so that the results of the test are valid and useful when planning your child’s instruction and determining areas of academic need.
Google Meet Codes:
ELA MAP - ELA Teacher code (the teacher will post the code on their Canvas calendar)
Math MAP - Math Teacher code (the teacher will post the code on their Canvas calendar)
Teachers will talk to students about this change in schedule.
Mrs. Balter and Mrs. Madden

Emergency Card Procedures on Family File
HCPSS utilizes Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information. Regardless of virtual or in-person learning, parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child. Parents/guardians can complete Family File by logging in to HCPSS Connect, selecting the More Options tab on the left, and then selecting Family File in the center column. Family File guides are available online.
Please send attendance notes to DLESAbsence@hcpss.org.
Active student participation is the key to student achievement, both in the classroom and during distance learning. Teachers will design engaging lessons and activities, both for virtual live classes and online assignments. Regular participation is essential for student growth, and students are expected to engage in learning activities every week.
Student attendance for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday instruction will occur as follows:
At the elementary level, both the homeroom teacher and mathematics teacher will take attendance, noting whether students were present online for synchronous instruction.
Daily attendance will be based on teacher-recorded attendance for the entire school day.
Student attendance for Wednesday instruction will occur as follows:
A student will be counted as present if they do one or more of the following since the previous Wednesday:
Submit an assignment to one of their teachers
Engage in synchronous instruction with an HCPSS teacher
Complete work in the Canvas learning management system, DreamBox or Lexia Core5
School Counseling Connection Newsletter
The Elementary School Counseling Connection Newsletter is a great resource for students and parents to read together. Included in this new issue of the School Counseling Connection Newsletter are great self-care ideas and fun activities for home. Please feel free to continue to reach out to Mrs. Tobin, our School Counselor, if you need support!
Face-to-Face Supports to Small Groups of Students
In the coming weeks, HCPSS will begin providing face-to-face support to small groups of students. Identified students and staff have been invited to complete an interest survey. If you did not receive a survey, it is because your child has not yet been identified for in-person support.
All students who receive special education services will receive an email with directions to complete a survey. If your child receives special education services, and you have not received an email by Friday, September 25, then please reach out to Ann Scholz (email@example.com) from the Office of Special Education Compliance, Non-Public Services, and Family Support. More information about the HCPSS In-Person Support initiative can be found here: https://www.hcpss.org/2020-2021/small-groups/ .
